The last 60 years have witnessed a general change in the shape of Catholic worship building throughout the world. This transformation is attributed to the Church’s most significant event of the last century: the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). This new research wants to approach the Council event from the point of view of the place of worship, trying to answer some questions about which much has been written and said in the last decades: did the Council have a concrete idea of how churches should be? How did he intend buildings of worship to be constructed? We will focus on the key moment of this process: the period between 1947 and 1970, delimited by Pius XII’s encyclical Mediator Dei (1947) and Paul VI’s Missal (1970). The research considers aspects of a historical, theological, liturgical and artistic nature. The study works directly with archival funds, many of which are unpublished, that allowed to reconstruct and to examine the editing process of the main documents of the Church, counting also on the precious oral testimony of some of the direct protagonists .
